A soggy start to February

It is February 1st and an extremely wet one, I might add! It started out as freezing rain early this morning but the temps have risen so now it is just plain rain - pouring down, soggy, drenching rain! While it isn’t my favorite type of weather, it is necessary.

We received a notice from our water company just yesterday explaining the dire situation the reservoir is in despite the fact it is in the middle of winter and no one is thinking about water conservation. Apparently, we need 28 inches of water though to fill the reservoir back up and there is not much hope that will occur before summer rolls around. I do believe today’s waterfall though will bring that number down just a tad… or more.

Anyway, so onto the national news of the day - Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo, huh?!? Guess they decided to beat Google to it and provide some leverage in the playing field. Yahoo rejected their first offer a while back but I guess given Yahoo’s recent performance, they are giving this 2nd offer more than a cursory glance. It will be interesting to see what happens.

On a personal bummer note, I had bought some stock a few years back based on a guru’s analysis that I read in a money magazine. I bought it twice for an average price of $6 a share. Earlier this year, I had to sell it to meet some financial obligations. I made a profit; however, I have been getting Yahoo notices for the past two weeks that it has skyrocketed well beyond what I sold it for! The guru was right but unfortunately, my needs required me to sell it before it reached its full potential. So, while I didn’t totally lose out, it’s still a bummer! It’s been exciting to see that my first endeavor in the stock market was successful though.

So, I am out of the cubicle farm today but back on Monday… lots of applications to sort through for a project we support. Should be fun!

Until then, stay soggy!

One Mad Dash!

My life for the past week has been one mad dash! Two monumental birthdays were celebrated, a bathroom remodeled and I continued to come to work through it all… what is wrong with me?!?

My little nephew turned 1 on Sunday so you can only imagine the hype that went into that party. Yesterday, my sister celebrated her 30th so we, of course, had to do that one up in style. Actually, we aren’t even finished with hers yet. A party/picnic is this Saturday and then we are taking her somewhere special later in September (our schedules are SO full that we had to bump it that far back - how sad is that?!!?).

Yeah! The upstairs bathroom is almost completed after a year’s worth of planning and buying odds and ends to furnish it in the Tuscany style my brain had created. I love to decorate but it seems to take me a long time to refine it and get it to completion. I bought the most awesome sink a couple of weeks ago (cherry colored wooden cabinet with a black granite top and a white ceramic sink) so that was the last piece needed before starting the remodel. The faucets are all brushed nickel and the shower curtain rod and the towel hanger are a bronzed nickel. The walls are a blue pattern on top and the bottom sports a sandstone texture with a hued yellow to mimic the walls you’d imagine in an old Italian town. Instead of chair rail in the middle dividing the two colors, there will be 4×12 inch tiles - made in Italy!

So, all of the busyiness has been fun but exhausting… I think I see the end of the tunnel though. I am in the office today and tomorrow but then I have a class elsewhere on Friday so that will be a break, of sorts, before heading into the weekend. Heatwave Strikes!

Okay, of all days for the heatwave to hit the Washington DC area… the day I have to amuse myself for a few hours after work before going to an outdoor Shakespeare performance with some friends! I should probably keep an eye on the website regarding tonight’s event as they may cancel it due to the heat. The poor actors in those hot, stuffy medieval costumes - yikes! It makes me feel faint just thinking about it!

It was quite warm over the weekend so today is pushing the envelope even more - 100-105 degrees. But I can’t complain - we had one of the most gorgeous and lengthy springs that I can remember. And our summer has been extremely mild and wet until now. So, I will suck it up and enjoy the sauna - gotta look at it from a beneficial aspect for survival purposes!

I think I might find a library or a bookstore and stay there for awhile… sippin on a java and reading a captivating book!

Meanwhile, I must get back to work. I a have to get a newsletter out by tomorrow and have a few other items to pull together.

A Monday of the Rainiest Sort

It's raining… that sort of dismal drizzling kind. I like a good thunderstorm myself. None of this pitiful, sad dribbling. Oh, well. It's good for my flowers and makes for greener grass so I shall not complain. The only other bummer is that I intended to go swimming this very afternoon! Someone forgot to forecast the weather before I made my inviting afternoon plans. I will look on the bright side (although it's a little difficult at the moment) and hope that the sun does eventually come out before I leave work in a few hours so that I can take advantage of a borrowed pool.

My only other opportunity for swimming this summer came in the form of the Fairfield Inn's pool in Charlottesville. Unfortunately, some drunk bums also felt it would be a nice lounging spot at 9:30 one evening so that put an abrupt end to our time in the pool. It just didn't have the same ambience once they entered the scene.

So, the rain might thwart my swimming ambitions but it will not conquer me! I may have to resort to the closest (to be effective, it will also need to be rather deep and wide - like a pool, for instance) puddle if the rain doesn't let up but swim I will!
